As of: 07/21/2022 4:38 p.m

Andrea Petkovic was the last German player to drop out of the women’s and men’s combined tennis tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum. In the men’s competition, co-favorite Andrey Rublev failed in the round of 16.

Tournament ambassador Petkovic had to retire in the quarterfinals due to injury. “It’s 90 percent an adductor strain,” said the 34-year-old last year’s finalist, who sustained the injury during the match against Estonian Anett Kontaveit and left the field with tears in her eyes when the score was 0-6, 0-2. This means that all eleven German participants have been eliminated from the individual competitions of the event.

Kontaveit clearly superior in the first sentence

Petkovic, who had started the game with an elbow injury anyway, had a lot of trouble against the powerful world number two in the first set. She rarely managed to get through the first serve. An injury to her left thigh threw her off course. During the break in sentences, she was treated by the physiotherapist.

Kontaveit now against Potapova

Number one seeded Kontaveit meets Russia’s Anastassijia Potapova in the semifinals. The world number 63 living in Dubai. had defeated the significantly better placed Czech Barbora Krejcikova 6:1, 6:3.

The second semi-final is played by Maryna Sanewska of Belgium and the winner of the match Bernarda Pera (USA) – Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic).

Rublev fails at Cerundolo

One day after defending champion Pablo Carreno Busta, the men’s next favorite was hit. Andrey Rublev, who won the tournament two years ago, was eliminated in the round of 16. The 24-year-old world number one from Russia lost to Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo 4:6, 2:6.

Cerundolo thus further underlined his good clay court form, just last Sunday he had won the tournament in Bastad, Sweden.
