Ahead of Thursday’s NATO summit, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday called for more military support for the Ukrainian counter-offensive. “Our stocks are getting smaller and smaller. We cannot continue like this,” he warned.
After the United States, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany announced more weapons and ammunition, Stoltenberg expects the same from other NATO members. “The weapons provided by NATO countries are used for the counter-offensive and make the difference,” Stoltenberg stressed. “We don’t know if it will be a turning point in the war, but the Ukrainians are making progress in liberating territory.”
Defense ministers’ talks that will start on Thursday in Brussels will focus on arms deliveries to Ukraine. Representatives of the defense industry, including “SMEs and groups”, have also been invited to the meeting on support to Ukraine. It is the last meeting before the NATO summit in Vilnius on 11 and 12 July.
With a month to go before the summit, the allies are still divided on several issues. In particular, the support that Ukraine needs on its way to membership in the organization has yet to be clarified.
