National Trekking Festival: nature at your feet

The city of El Chalten is preparing for a new edition of the National Trekking Festival, an event that brings together athletic events and cultural shows. The celebration recalls the first Argentine attempt to conquer Mount Fitz Roy, on March 18, 1948. In 1993, El Chaltén has been named as the “Provincial Trekking Capital” and for that reason it is a more than suitable place to carry out this festivity.

In each edition the presence of numerous visitors and competitors from Argentina and other countries is estimated for the “Trekkaton Race” and the “Shelter Challenge”. In this celebration, outdoor activities, sports practices and physical skills that are carried out within the area of ​​the park are prioritized. One of the most outstanding proposals of the meeting is the “Descent of the Tower”: 11 kilometers of mountain trails with a drop of 200 meters. Most of the route is downhill, with some slopes. The other is “The Shelter Challenge”, which consists of a cross country endurance test that includes a zip line over the Fitz Roy river.

According to the authorities of the city of Santa Cruz, this festival “is considered the most important event of the year for those who enjoy hiking.” And they maintain that the event “combines the cultural, with the artistic and challenges of the nature of El Chaltén.”
