National coach track cyclists temporarily resigns after collision with Amy Pieters

Fulco van Gulik will temporarily stop his duties as national coach for track cyclists. The KNWU cycling association informed the NOS today. Van Gulik was involved in the fall of Amy Pieters, in which the cyclist from Zwanenburg suffered serious brain damage.

Van Gulik was present on December 23 last year at the training camp of Pieters and her teammates in Spain. The North Holland cyclist had a hard fall there. “Amy fell together with Fulco, they came into contact with each other,” said KNWU head coach Jan van Veen.

Pieters’ situation is unchanged. The Zwanenburg cyclist is still in a coma, but is stable. The involvement of the national coach was not made public before, because ‘this concerns secondarily those present at the accident and primarily Amy’s friend and family’, says Van Veen.

Van Gulik’s tasks will be taken over by Mehdi Kordi, who was already in the sprint selection.
