Mystery solved! This is why some gardens are not mowed completely

The municipality has the verges, parks and public gardens in Zoetermeer mowed. But on some freshly mowed lawns we still see places full of tall grass. Have those pieces of grass been forgotten or is there another reason? nearby is looking into it.

This summer, the municipality of Zoetermeer is conducting a trial in which lawns are partly mowed.

To mow and not to mow

An example of a partly mowed lawn can be seen in the Princess Ariane Park in the Driemanspolder district. A spokesperson for the municipality explains: “The grass in the Princess Ariane Park has largely been mowed. This summer – as a test – constantly changing parts of the park will not be mowed. After a few weeks, these pieces will be mowed again and pieces will remain on other parts of the lawn. In this way, food for insects remains in the park.”

Don’t mow May

In the Princess Ariane Park, but also in other places in the city, there are now white information boards with the text As a test, parts of the lawn are not mowed for the insects. In the month of May there were other signs with the text Don’t mow May. This is an action in which municipalities and residents were called upon not to mow in the month of May. This is to help bees and other insects with food and thus increase biodiversity.

All summer long

Initially, the intention was to carry out the test only in May, but the municipality wants to continue it this summer. So you will more often encounter partly mowed green areas in the city.
