Musk lets Twitter users decide whether Trump will return: 14 million people have already voted | News

Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, is asking users of the popular messaging service to vote on a possible return of former president Donald Trump to the platform. For now, a slight majority seems to welcome Trump again.

Earlier this week, Republican Trump tried to overturn his permanent suspension on Twitter via an appeal. Trump was banned from social media after his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Since his acquisition, Musk has already restored several controversial user accounts.

More than 14 million Twitter users have already voted in the poll that Musk posted online via his own Twitter account. At the moment, there seems to be a majority for Trump’s return. The poll will run until Sunday a quarter to two at night Belgian time.

“Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk tweeted during the vote, Latin for “The voice of the people is the voice of God.” With this he wants to make it clear that the opinion of the users is decisive for the decision whether or not to let Trump return.

Twitter said last year it removed Trump from the platform “because of the risk of further incitement to violence” after his supporters stormed the US parliament. They tried to prevent the results of the presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden, from being ratified. In May this year, a judge in San Francisco rejected his lawyers’ claim that the ban violated free speech.

Trump had more than eighty million followers on Twitter. On his Twitter copy Truth Social there are only a few million and that platform is also struggling with financial problems.

Crisis

Meanwhile, the crisis at Twitter seems to have reached a new height. The company’s offices will remain closed for an unknown reason. Many employees would like to leave because Musk wants them to sign a promise that they have to work hard. At the same time, the platform suffers from stability problems, but there would be insufficient staff to deal with bugs and other problems.
