You have to be careful again in the municipality of Waterland due to high water. The strong northeasterly wind and the wet weather are once again causing inconvenience at the Monnickendam marina and in the Hemmeland recreational area.
The water level in the Markermeer is still high due to the heavy rainfall recently. It has also been difficult to drain (discharging water onto the IJsselmeer) in recent days due to the high water level in the IJsselmeer and the strong wind.
Dog sinks in mud
The municipality of Waterland warns of a lot of mud and high water on the Hemmeland. “Be careful if you plan to go to the Hemmeland.”
Last weekend a dog sank into the mud in the recreation area. The video below, in which a woman rescues a dog from quicksand, was widely shared on social media.

The high water caused a lot of inconvenience in the municipalities of Edam-Volendam, Waterland and Hoorn at the beginning of this year. The water also caused a lot of damage in the areas outside the dikes.
To repair this damage, various collection campaigns were organized, because the areas outside the dikes are not insured against water damage. After all, they are outside the dikes.
Sandbags remain in Volendam
In Volendam it was therefore decided to leave the large yellow sandbags at the Zuideinde. This is because the water level of the Markermeer is still high. With strong easterly winds this can cause nuisance. The sandbags have been removed in all other areas.
