For the first time a woman takes on the role of Zidler in “Moulin Rouge!” – and it’s Megan Thee Stallion. What makes their debut so special.
American rapper Megan Thee Stallion will make her Broadway debut in spring 2026. In “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” she takes on the role of nightclub impresario Zidler – a character that is traditionally cast as a male. Thee Stallion is the first female actor in this role. The eight-week engagement period begins March 24, 2026 at the Al Hirschfeld Theater in New York and ends May 17, 2026. Megan performs all scheduled performances during this time, with the exception of the two shows on May 2. The production itself is expected to have its final Broadway performance on July 26, 2026.
The role of Zidler
The character of Zidler – originally Harold Zidler in the classic film – is the pulsating heart of the Moulin Rouge cabaret and acts as narrator and host of the entire spectacle. Previous performers in the role include Boy George, Wayne Brady and most recently Bob The Drag Queen, who ends his commitment on March 22nd before Megan takes over.
Producer Carmen Pavlovic called Megan’s signing one of the greatest moments in the show’s history. She emphasized that this casting is not only a culmination of the final phase of the production, but also a significant step in the development of the musical itself.
Integration of your own music
In addition to the historical casting, there are suggestions that the musical could incorporate elements from Megan Thee Stallion’s own repertoire. Pavlovic explained: “We want our show to end with a spectacular bang, and Megan is the force of nature that will take us there. And yes, there will be a touch of music from her own iconic repertoire. It’s an unmissable moment for both Megan’s fans and ours.”
The musical is designed as a jukebox show and combines hits from over seven decades of pop music – from the Rolling Stones to Outkast to Britney Spears.
Megan Thee Stallion on the theater stage
For Megan Thee Stallion, the Broadway debut role represents a creative step outside of her established music and film work. Commenting on her casting, she said: “I’ve always believed in evolving creatively and theater is definitely a new opportunity that I’m excited to take on. Broadway requires a different level of discipline, preparation and storytelling, but I’m up for the challenge and can’t wait to show the hotties a new side of me.”
In addition to a successful music career with multiple Grammy awards, she has gained acting experience in films such as “Dicks: The Musical” as well as in the TV productions “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and “P-Valley”. Most recently, she had a guest appearance on the NBC comedy “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins,” in which her character Denise develops a relationship with Daniel Radcliffe’s character.
