Mondrian’s watercolor discovered from his Uden period

Despite the fact that Mondrian has been dead for more than 75 years, new work by him has been discovered. Researchers at the RKD-Netherlands Institute for Art History have discovered a hitherto unknown watercolor by Mondrian from 1904. The work is called ‘Barn doors of a Brabant farm building’.

The Swedish auction house Bukowskis tracked down the work. It suspected that it was a Mondrian and therefore called in the help of the RKD. With success, because the work turned out to be a real Mondrian.

Mondriaan made this work when he lived in Uden. The world-famous artist moved to the Brabant village in 1904. He wasn’t very comfortable in his own skin. His friends advised him to go to Brabant for a while. His stay did not last long. After a year, Mondrian left for Amsterdam again.
