Minister Van Peteghem ‘asks’ the banking sector to raise interest on savings accounts. Why doesn’t he oblige them?

Major banks such as KBC and ING are reporting high profit figures. This is largely due to the growing difference between high mortgage interest rates and low interest rates on savings. The National Bank therefore already urged to raise the interest on savings. Today, Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V) sent a letter of formal notice to the entire banking sector. Does that mean that the De Croo government wants to oblige the banks to raise our savings interest rates? Or are there still opponents to be found?
