Minister Marjolein Faber of Asylum and migration says to wait until the Babayants family comes from the church in Kampen. The asylum application from the family from Emmen has been rejected and therefore they must be deported. “They will come out of it once,” Faber said about the family prior to the Council of Ministers.

The minister did not think that was a ‘hard statement’. According to her, nobody is above the law, not even in a church.

The Babayants family lives in the Netherlands for eleven years and tries to get a residence permit all the time. They have four children, aged 3 to 20, of whom two were born in the Netherlands. The immigration and naturalization service stipulated last year that they had to go back to Uzbekistan, because according to the IND it is safe enough for that.

They are in the church in Kampen, because a church service cannot be disturbed and the family can stay there as long as the service lasts. That so -called church shelter is used more often to prevent that exhausted asylum seekers can be deported.
