AUDIO: Sport: Zverev muss gegen Lehecka nachsitzen (5 Min)

Two-Set Lead

Stand: June 6, 2026, 11:58 PM

Tennis professional Alexander Zverev will have to return for his fourth-round match in Wimbledon. The decision against Czech player Jiri Lehecka was postponed just before 11 PM London time with Zverev leading 6-4, 7-5, 3-3.

The unfortunate interruption was no surprise, as the Hamburg player stepped onto the Center Court over two hours earlier. Previous matches had run too long, particularly the five-set thriller where local favorite Artur Fery triumphed amidst cheers from tennis fans over Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov. Play cannot occur after 11 PM on the grounds.

Zverev Displaying Nerve

Up until the delay, Zverev, who has never made it past the fourth round of Wimbledon, was performing excellently. After a shaky start where he faced three break points, he composed himself impressively. A brilliant overhead shot helped him claim Lehecka’s fifth service game for a 5-4 lead, subsequently sealing the first set.

In the second set, Zverev again had to stave off two break points but responded strong. This time, he managed to convert his second break point during his opponent’s sixth service game at deuce. Following that, the 29-year-old secured a service game to love, preventing the tie-break.

The action was not over—around 10:30 PM local time, the third set began, with time to utilize prior to the curfew. Curiously, Zverev once again faced two break points but was able to level at 2-2 after a shaky start. When the match was interrupted, the score stood at 3-3.

Fritz the Fearsome Opponent Awaits

Should Zverev continue, he is set to face Taylor Fritz in a possible quarter-final. The US seventh ranked player prevailed against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik after a commanding performance in only 1 hour and 38 minutes of play, winning 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-3.

The 28-year-old serves as a formidable opponent for the North German, having won the last seven head-to-head encounters. This includes the 2024 Wimbledon fourth round and the last semi-final match in Halle/Westphalia.
