Miley Cyrus’ laid out where her rough voice color comes from. The musician has a Reinke-edema-a chronic change in her vocal cords. A large, benign polyp forms that gives her voice this unmistakable rough sound – but at the same time making singing is quite exhausting. Every live appearance means both physical and mental stress for the 32-year-old, which is why it has to protect her vocal cords.
Medical cause: Reinke-edema
In an interview with Zane Lowe, Miley Cyrus explained: “It is part of my anatomy. I have a very large polyp on the vocal cord. He gave me a lot of the tone and the texture that make me out.” And further: “But it is extremely difficult to perform with it – as if you are running a marathon with weights on the ankles.”
On Instagram, the singer recently shared a video in which she dances a choreo and sings. This heated up the hope of the fans for another tour. However, in addition to the disease for Cyrus, a new world tour is hardly possible or only under certain conditions: it should be sustainable and pay off economically, since fixed costs such as crew, technology and transport have to be covered. “If I don’t play enough concerts, it makes no sense mathematically,” said Cyrus in the interview. And Playback is not an option for you.
Why Miley Cyrus rejects an operation
In conversation with DJ Zane Lowe, Cyrus also admitted that her previous life with parties, alcohol and cigarettes had not exactly helped her voice-but that was not the cause of Reinke-Edema. Despite the pain, she doesn’t want to be operated on. The fear of no longer sounding like it after an operation is too great. “I’m my voice,” she said in conversation – and she doesn’t want to lose it.
For Miley Cyrus, this disease is both a curse and a trademark. But the “Flowers” singer cannot be stopped: on May 30th, her new album Something Beautiful will be released. In June there is also a film of its own film to the album, which Cyrus itself describes as a “pop opera”.
