Mikaela Shiffrin cries after slalom victory: friend fell badly

On Saturday, ski racer Aleksander Kilde fell badly. A few days later, his partner reacted emotionally after a slalom triumph.

The sixth win of the season was the most emotional so far this winter for ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin. The past few days had been “challenging,” said the American after her triumph in the night slalom in Flachau. At first she put her hand over her face in disbelief at the finish, then shed a few tears during the interviews.

She would like to thank her team for their support, said Shiffrin after her success on Tuesday evening – and for making it possible for her to go to the hospital to see her partner Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. Shiffrin reported that her “heart was with him” and she called him from the finish line immediately after her race in Austria.

Shiffrin on Kilde’s fall: “Not a good feeling”

The Norwegian Kilde had a serious fall in the legendary Lauberhorn downhill run in Wengen on Saturday. He dislocated his shoulder and sustained a cut in his calf. He was then taken to Bern by helicopter and operated on there. However, initial images of the accident gave rise to fears that the injuries would be much worse.

The athlete from Colorado celebrated her 94th World Cup victory and fourth success in the slalom this season in Flachau. In the overall ranking of this discipline, she is just ahead of Olympic champion Petra Vlhova from Slovakia, who has won three slalom runs so far this winter. At Vlhova’s home game at Jasna, the duel goes into the next round next Sunday.
