Mexico wins the Gold Cup again: Giménez matchwinner against Panama

The Mexican national team has won the Gold Cup for the ninth time. Coach Jaime Lozano’s team beat Panama 1-0 (0-0) in the final of the continental tournament in Inglewood, California on Sunday (local time). Santiago Giménez became the match winner with his winning goal in the 88th minute.

Giménez had been substituted on just three minutes earlier. The 22-year-old Feyenoord forward received the ball on a counterattack on the halfway line and was unstoppable on his way to the goal from two opponents.

After losing the final two years ago, Mexico triumphed again at the Gold Cup, ahead of the USA, which won seven times, the selection called “El Tri” is the record winner. With a squad value of 167.6 million euros, Mexico had the highest valued team this year. After participating in the finals in 2005 and 2013, Panama was not able to win their first title. Panama eliminated co-hosts USA in the semifinals.
