Mess on the road: huge traffic jams due to slippery conditions, motorists glide at a walking pace to their destination

Frozen snow is causing huge traffic jams in many places in the province. On the A7 towards Amsterdam, motorists drive at walking pace for about 30 kilometers and people who want to enter the province via the A4 take hours to do so. A motorist in a traffic jam tells NH: “It’s really slippery. We drive at walking pace, and we really have to maneuver carefully to ensure that no accidents happen.”

The people who have to go to the province are stuck on the A4 and the A44 towards Amsterdam, because up to and including Hoofddorp-Zuid there is a heavy traffic jam with delays of more than an hour. According to the ANWB, nothing special happened there, but traffic is moving slowly along the entire highway because it is slippery. There are also long traffic jams on the A7, A9 and almost all major N-roads.

A switch failure means that few trains run to and from Hilversum, but people who have to go to Schiphol or Leiden should also check their travel planner. According to the NS, there are no intercity trains on the route between Almere, Amsterdam-Zuid and Schiphol due to a switch failure. Most trains are expected to run normally again after the morning rush hour.

Code yellow

The KNMI has issued a code yellow for this morning due to the expected slippery conditions. Although our province has not had as much snow as elsewhere in the country, the low temperatures in combination with the snow mean that the road can be slippery.

Rijkswaterstaat spread about 8.6 million kilos of salt last night to combat slippery conditions, but that did not help everywhere.
