HANNOVER (dpa-AFX) – Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz sees no justification for possible US interference in Cuba. “Despite all the domestic problems this country has with the communist regime, Cuba poses no discernible threat to third countries outside of Cuba,” said the CDU politician after German-Brazilian government consultations in Hanover. “And that’s why I don’t see on what basis an intervention should take place here.”

He could only give urgent advice to address any conflicts through diplomatic means and peacefully, “so as not to start a new conflict in the world without necessity, which would also only create additional problems,” the Chancellor continued.

He stands for a strong ability to defend himself. “But defense capability does not mean having the right to intervene militarily in other states if their political systems do not correspond to what others imagine,” said Merz.

Lula: Where is respect for human rights?

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also opposed a possible invasion of Cuba. “I am against disrespect for the territorial integrity of nations. I am against any country in the world interfering in the political affairs of another country and dictating how its society should or should not be organized,” said the head of state. “Where is the self-determination of peoples? Where is respect for human rights? Where is respect for the UN Charter?”

Trump threatened to “take over” Cuba

US President Donald Trump said in mid-April with regard to the war in Iran: “Maybe we’ll stop by Cuba when we’re done with this.” Cuba is a failed state. Trump had already repeatedly threatened to take tougher action against Cuba and openly spoken of a possible “takeover”./cwe/DP/he
