Measurements show large methane leaks from American platforms at sea

The oil and gas extraction in the Gulf of Mexico actually releases twice as many greenhouse gases as according to official figures. Researchers at the University of Michigan discovered this by measuring the actual emissions from the platforms at sea from an airplane. They discovered that especially from offshore platforms of an older type, in which oil and gas from various drilling platforms in the area are collected, much more methane leaks out than on paper.
