Max Verstappen and Diede de Groot nominated for ‘Sports Oscar’ | formula 1

Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen and wheelchair tennis player Diede de Groot have again been nominated this year for the Laureus Awards, the prizes that are considered the ‘Oscars of sport.’ The winners will be announced at a gala in Madrid on April 22.

Verstappen, who won his third world title last year, has a chance to win the silver statue for the sportsman of the year. De Groot, winner of all Grand Slam tournaments in 2023, has been nominated in the category of athletes with disabilities. She has been nominated several times before.

Verstappen has also been nominated for the team of the year award with his Formula 1 team Red Bull. In 2022, the Limburger was the first Dutch sportsman to win the prestigious ‘Oscar’. Last year, Lionel Messi received the coveted prize. The Argentine footballer has also been nominated again this year, as have tennis player Novak Djokovic, pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, footballer Erling Haaland and sprinter Noah Lyles.

There are also six nominees for women: football player Aitana Bonmatí, athletes Shericka Jackson, Faith Kipyegon and Sha’Carri Richardson, skier Mikaela Shiffrin and tennis player Iga Swiatek.
