Maureen made a rigorous career change: ‘I never expected to end up here’

Don’t count the days, make the days count. That is the motto of home care store Vegro in Zoetermeer. Maureen Bekooy is at the helm as branch manager. The store sells aids such as crutches and wheelchairs, among other things Vegro does so much more. Maureen wants everyone to know that: “Together we do everything for good care.”

Vegro is a home care store where private individuals and healthcare workers can go for all kinds of home care items. Think of wheelchairs and crutches, but also stair lifts, shower chairs and more. “Everything someone needs to live comfortably at home,” says Maureen. “This way, people can continue to live at home with peace of mind as they get older, but also, for example, recuperate after an operation.”

Collaboration in healthcare

But that’s not the only thing Vegro does. The company also works a lot for healthcare institutions such as nursing homes, hospitals and treatment centers. “In Zoetermeer we work together with Vierstroom, a major healthcare partner in the area. They provide the care and we guarantee that they have the right tools for it. In this way, we work together with healthcare institutions as much as possible to provide the best care.”

Healthcare laboratory

In addition, Vegro has a ‘lab’ at its head office where students and researchers work daily on improving care and care aids. “We recreated a living room and bedroom there. All kinds of new tools are tested there. Vegro is really much more than a store,” says Maureen. “We are doing everything we can to innovate healthcare and improve quality of life.”

From fashion to healthcare

After a long career in fashion, Maureen Bekooy never expected that she would end up at Vegro. A former colleague who knew her as a manager in her previous company tipped her off about the job. “The products are different than I was used to, so I really had to work hard for that,” Maureen explains. “It was tough, because giving the right advice means that you have to know this sector inside and out. I studied a lot for that. Fortunately, you are never too old to learn.” She has now been working for Vegro for eight years and she doesn’t want anything else. “I am now a branch manager for Zoetermeer and Berkel en Rodenrijs.”

‘Just come by’

Vegro Zoetermeer can be found on the edge of the Stadshart. According to Maureen, that is the perfect location. “The parking garage is nearby. So people don’t have to walk far to our store,” she says. People also sometimes walk in with questions when they go shopping. “Do you have a family member who needs a mobility scooter? Are you recovering and are you having trouble at home? Or do you simply have questions about how you can make it more comfortable at home for yourself or a family member? Then come by. We are here to help, even if you just need advice.”
