Does he stay or does he go? This question was posed at FC Bayern for a long time in the Dayot Upamecano case. His advisors are likely to play a crucial role in this.
The stalemate surrounding Dayot Upamecano has angered many FC Bayern fans and those in charge. First the poker for millions dragged on for months. Then the defense attorney allowed a deadline for an early extension to pass. Now there is a signature in the room: a contract until 2030 with an annual salary of 20 million euros and around 20 million euros in earnest money.
There has been discussion in Munich for days about how this development could have come about. Bayern patron Uli Hoeneß sharply criticized the 27-year-old’s advisors. The question is whether they are responsible for the contract theater.
Now Matthias Sammer also speaks out. The former Bayern professional and current BVB advisor goes even further. In the Sky talk “Sammer & Basile – The Hagedorn Talk” he called for drastic consequences.
When asked by moderator Riccardo Basile whether players should get by without an agent, Sammer answered clearly: “Yes, I would get rid of them. Firstly, they earn too much money. Secondly, they are unnecessary and thirdly, that does not create a constellation that is good between player and club. That is not good.”
Sammer further explained his stance and described his perspective on contract negotiations. He said: “There is a sports director, a sports director, sitting together with an advisor. You are talking to the most important person (meaning the player – editor), who may not even be there.” And further: “The person who negotiates this (meaning consultant) earns three times the annual salary of the person sitting here (meaning sports director). That’s sick.”
