Mathieu van der Poel for the third time as cyclist of the year

Cyclist Mathieu van der Poel has been named cyclist of the year in the Netherlands for the third time. The 28-year-old Van der Poel became world champion in the field and on the road in 2023.

Van der Poel won the Gerrit Schulte Trophy for best cyclist earlier in 2019 and 2020. He won the cyclo-cross world title for the fifth time in January. He then won the classics Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix on the road.

In August he became the first Dutchman to win the world title in Glasgow since Joop Zoetemelk in 1985. Van der Poel succeeds Dylan van Baarle.

69 victories for Team Jumbo-Visma
The new award for cycling team of the year went to Team Jumbo-Visma. The team managed to win the final classification in the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and the Vuelta in 2023. The team recorded 69 victories in 2023.

The elections and the cycling gala were organized by Club 48, the association of former professional cyclists.

Demi Vollering was also chosen as cyclist of the year during the cycling gala in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. She won, among other things, the Tour de France Femmes in 2023.
