Mathieu van der Poel and Dylan van Baarle as leaders from Orange to World Cycling Championships | Sport

Mathieu van der Poel and Dylan van Baarle will be the leaders of the Dutch team at the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow next month. KNWU national coach Koos Moerenhout announced this this morning.

In addition to Van der Poel and Van Baarle, Pascal Eenkhoorn, Olav Kooij, Daan Hoole, Jan Maas, Oscar Riesebeek and Mick van Dijke also defend the colors of Orange in Scotland. Jos van Emden and Hoole ride the time trial.

According to national coach Koos Moerenhout, the Scottish course resembles a classic and he considers the riders of Jumbo-Visma (Van Baarle) and Alpecin-Deceuninck (Van der Poel) the most suitable for that. With Olav Kooij, Moerenhout also brings a sprinter.

According to technical director and chef de mission Wilbert Broekhuizen, the good performances of the Dutch in the Tour de France, among other things, prove that the selection can go for ‘top results’. ,,With Mathieu we have a finisher in house, who should be able to handle this World Championship perfectly”, adds Moerenhout. ,,Dylan van Baarle also proved that he can perform well on a round like this more often.”

In the women’s race, Demi Vollering must succeed Annemiek van Vleuten at the beginning of August. The 40-year-old winner of the Giro Donne is in the selection for her last World Cup, but Vollering is the leader. “This spring, Demi has shown that she is of an exceptionally high level on a difficult course and we naturally hope that there will be no restrictions on her at this World Cup”, explains national coach Loes Gunnewijk.
