In the case of the killed Maryam from Afghanistan, a mixed DNA trace has become an indication for the investigators. A DNA expert explained the complex analyzes to the Berlin district court on Friday.

“Everything was concentrated on a trace that was secured on the wrist tape complex,” said the expert from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office. A mixed DNA trace was found that points to the victim and probably to one of the accused. However, only little DNA material was available.

According to prosecutors, the two 27 and 23-year-olds are said to have killed their sister Maryam because she did not submit to the family’s moral standards and also had a romantic relationship. The charge is conspiracy to murder with base motives. The brothers are said to have killed their sister on July 13, 2021 at a previously unknown location, taking her body in a trolley with a taxi to the Berlin-Südkreuz train station and then by ICE to Bavaria.

Around three weeks later, the corpse – hands and feet tied with tape, mouth and nose wrapped with tape – was discovered in a hole in the ground near where the older defendant lived in Bavaria. The brothers have so far remained silent on the allegations.

The expert explained that a torn piece of a disposable glove had been secured on the adhesive tape with which the dead woman was tied. This remnant of a fingertip was sandwiched between two layers of tape. The piece was “prepared” and analyzed. The expert spoke of a “DNA profile at the limit of what is feasible”. No other DNA traces relevant to the investigation were found.

It is now becoming apparent that the process, which has been going on for around five and a half months, will continue to drag on. The district court scheduled further days of hearings into December.

The trial will resume on September 1st.
