Market values Türkiye: Minus for Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in the Süper Lig

Update in the Süper Lig

The first market value updates of the 2023/24 season will be available at Transfermarkt in September and October, and the major leagues will start with the Süper Lig with over 600 updates. Gedson Fernandes from Besiktas will receive the biggest upgrade, being one of only two teams to increase in squad value. Among other things, the other two top clubs from Istanbul, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, have suffered a loss despite a strong start to the season.

Fernandes continued his strong development at his third club in Turkey in the first weeks of the new season, jumping from 12 million to 17 million euros. Since the transfer from Benfica Lisbon to Besiktas in the summer of 2022, it is the third consecutive plus for the central midfielder, who has almost tripled his market value since then.

“Gedson Fernandes has a very good market, many clubs are interested in him. Besiktas wants to sell the player for a profit soon. If he had been sold at the old market value, there would have been no profit left for the club because he was brought in from Benfica for 6 million euros and the Portuguese have a resale share of 50 percent,” explains Gökhan Yagmur, area manager for Transfermarkt Turkey. A change in the range of the new market value would not only bring Besiktas a transfer profit, but also make the 24-year-old one of the three most expensive sales in the club’s history.

As the biggest winner of the market value update, Fernandes moves into the top 10 of the most valuable professionals in the Süper Lig and into first place at Besiktas. The “Black Eagles” started the season with nine wins from twelve competitive games, in which winter signing Vincent Aboubakar also played a key role with six goals and three assists. As in June, the 31-year-old has increased by one million euros to now 7 million euros. Overall, Besiktas will increase by 1.63 million euros, the only increase in squad value in the league alongside newly promoted Caykur Rizespor (+0.7 million euros).

Süper Lig market values: Fenerbahce and Galatasaray lose squad value

As a result, the other 18 clubs lose value, including Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, who are still unbeaten in all competitions. The reigning cup winners won all twelve competitive games of the season so far, all of which they started as favorites, and still recorded the biggest loss in the league at 5.3 million euros. The reasons for this lie primarily in the past transfer summer, in which Fenerbahce signed 15 new signings, some of them well-known.

Yagmur explains: “Due to the additions, there was a very high squad value of more than 200 million euros after the end of the change period, which cannot be justified by the good start to the season. Many of the new additions had to be adjusted. Fenerbahce also has the third oldest squad in the league at 27.1 years.” Top performers therefore either remain unchanged (Edin Dzeko) or are given a minus (Dusan Tadic, Michy Batshuayi). There are also weak players like Miguel Crespo (-2 to €6 million) and Samet Akaydin (-1.1 to €3.1 million).

The explanation for Galatasaray’s squad value development fits almost identically. The devaluations of new signings such as Wilfried Zaha (-2 to €20 million), Cédric Bakambu (-1.6 to €3.4 million), Tetê (-1 to €24 million), Tanguy Ndombélé (-1 to €21m), Hakim Ziyech (-1 to €15m), Davinson Sánchez (-1 to €14m) and Angeliño (-1 to €11m) have little to nothing to do with the performances shown so far to do, were just as unavoidable due to the move to a weaker league.

However, there are not only devaluations for the yellow-reds: six of the 13 upgrades across the league of at least 1 million euros go to Galatasaray’s account. Included are top goalscorer Mauro Icardi (+1 to €20 million), who scored ten times in his first eleven appearances, left winger Kerem Aktürkoglu (+2 to €17 million) and right-back Sacha Boey (+1 to €17 million). . €), which has more than quadrupled its market value since summer 2022.

Aside from the three traditional Istanbul clubs, Trabzonspor shapes the ups and downs. With new signing Batista Mendy (23), who is making a move from 3 million to 7 million euros, the 2022 champions are the second biggest winner in the Süper Lig. On the other side is the former 80 million purchase from Arsenal, Nicolas Pépé, who falls by 4 million to 14 million euros and reaches his lowest value since 2018, also the biggest loser in the squad.

The second largest loss also goes to Trabzonspor in the person of goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. “Unfortunately, Cakir missed the jump to Europe or the next step in his career. From now on it will be difficult to sell it for good money. If he is sold, then to Europe, said Trabzonspor President Ahmet Ali Ağaoğlu recently. However, the transfer fee is likely to be significantly lower than previously hoped. His competitor from the national team, Altay Bayindir, went to Manchester United for five million euros. And that despite the fact that he wasn’t a regular goalkeeper at Fenerbahce at the time.” For the 27-year-old, it goes from 12 million to 9 million euros. This means that the status as the most valuable keeper in the league belongs solely to Fenerbahce’s Dominik Livakovic, who remains unchanged at 12 million euros.

This is how transfer market market values work

The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
