After their active career, some ex-professionals try their hand as experts, consultants or trainers. There is another option for Mario Götze.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Mario Götze has taken a more comprehensive look at a source of income away from the football pitch. “I looked at how some of the US athletes invest – some of them are very active in the VC sector,” the 2014 world champion told Bloomberg in an interview.

In this case, VC stands for venture capital, a company that invests in young companies. “Then I looked at who was doing something like that in Europe and then developed a preference for VC,” Götze continued. His investment company Companion-M focuses on early-stage start-ups. Götze and his advisors examine around 100 potential deals per month and make one or two investments between 25,000 and 50,000 euros. However, success is not guaranteed.

“Like a bad pass on the football field – the question is what you learn from it,” Götze continued. He has seven or eight “intact investments.” The company’s investments include start-ups such as Parloa, Qualifyze, Flatpay and Eterno, a coworking and back office software tool for doctors.

The midfielder wants to make one or two more investments by the end of the year. And then? “After my career ends, I would like to concentrate on my investment activities.” The goal is to “build a self-sustaining portfolio” and finance new investments.
