On Wednesday, Laura Dahlmeier’s management confirmed the death of the ex-biathlete. Shortly afterwards it became known what happened in the hours after the accident.

The shock is still deep: Laura Dahlmeier is dead. The 31-year-old died in a salvage accident in Pakistan. She was recorded on Monday at the Leila Peak in the Karakorum Mountains by Steinschlag. Dahlmeier was at least seriously injured, it said on Tuesday. The fact that no signs of life could be found during a helicopter crossing at the scene of the accident already indicated nothing good.

There was clarity on Wednesday. After the rescue operation failed, Dahlmeier’s management first confirmed the death of the two-time Olympic champion to the German Press Agency. An official statement was later published via her Instagram channel. It also became known how Dahlmeier’s rope partner reacted shortly after the accident.

Dahlmeier hadn’t gone alone on the Leila Peak. She was on the way with Marina Krauss, with whom several mountains had previously climbed. According to the statement, the two women were in the descent from the summit on the morning of July 28th. In the case of a abseiling maneuver, Dahlmeier was then recorded by stone chips. Krauss, who is only referred to in the message as a “rope partner”, immediately set an emergency call. The rescue operation was then initiated immediately.

Apparently Krauss subsequently tried to reach Dahlmeier, but failed. “A recovery by the rope partner was tried for many hours, but was impossible due to the severity of the site and the continued stone chill,” it said in the statement. Krauss also had no sign of life from Dahlmeier. So she decided to withdraw from the danger zone during the night hours.

Dahlmeier was then spotted during the helicopter crossing the next day. Signs of life were not recognizable. A rescue by helicopter failed “due to technical and mining limits”, as it was said. The objective dangers at the scene of the accident and the risk of further rockfall would also have prevented the rescue from the ground.

“On the basis of the knowledge from the helicopter surge and the rope partners’ descriptions, the severity of the injuries can be assumed that Laura Dahlmeier is immediately death,” read the statement. The salvage was discontinued with darkness.

Krauss was brought back to the BaseCamp of Leila Peak by the climbing climbing. Dahlmeier’s rope partner survived the accident unharmed. She is looked after on site.

It is currently unclear how things will continue with Laura Dahlmeier’s body. In the message, there was talk of the fact that the salvage could not be realized under the current conditions. It was Dahlmeier’s “express and written will” that in such a case “nobody can risk his life to recover her.” Her wish was that her body stayed on the mountain.
