Marcel & Gijs give Eva Jinek a growth spurt: ‘Profits from VI exit’

Marcel & Gijs, the summer replacement for Today Inside, started with cautious viewing figures on SBS 6. The talk show attracts much less attention than VI and Eva Jinek benefits from that.

While Today Inside scored 942 thousand viewers last Monday, the summer replacement Marcel & Gijs premiered last night with 611 thousand viewers. Despite the fact that SBS 6 sees the number of viewers fall by 35 percent, these are still quite nice figures. The problem, however, is that new programs often lose viewers after the premiere.

Uncork champagne

In that light, it doesn’t help that the premiere of Marcel & Gijs scores a bit below expectations. TV connoisseur Rob Goossens bet on 750,000 viewers, Bridget Maasland even expected 850,000 people to watch and Johan Derksen predicted a score of 700,000 viewers for Shownieuws.

More importantly: what did SBS 6 itself focus on? Channel boss Marco Louwerens yesterday on Radio 538: “There will be quite a few people watching tonight, but it’s about the average. If only 400 thousand viewers would look at it, and even more important for us: 12 percent market share, then I would uncork the champagne.”

SBS 6 satisfied?

With 12 percent market share, Marco refers to the score in the commercial target group. Yesterday, Marcel & Gijs took a market share of 14 percent in both the general and the commercial target group (20 to 54 years old), which is a ‘good’ score according to viewing figures analyst Tina Nijkamp. She speaks of a ‘good start’.

But, she notes: “Eva Jinek is even happier than Marcel & Gijs. She benefits HUGE from VI being gone. She scored 596 thousand viewers last Monday, now 166 thousand more to 762 thousand viewers and 6 points higher in target group. So the pastry chef gets busy: cake for both Jinek and Marcel & Gijs.”

Not from the tube

Tina expects Marcel & Gijs to drop and they also take that into account at SBS 6. Marco emphasizes, however: “We are not at all concerned with: oh, as long as it becomes a great success! We’re going to try it for a month. If it doesn’t work, then it’s a real shame, but at least we’ve tried something new.”

If Marcel & Gijs collapse sharply, will it be released early? “We will continue for a month anyway. We’re not going to stop after ten episodes. We’ll finish that month anyway. That anyway. I’m not that into the numbers.”
