Marc-André ter Stegen sits on the bench in Barcelona’s win against Osasuna. A change of club in the winter could save his World Cup ambitions.

With Marc-André ter Stegen on the bench as a spectator, FC Barcelona has consolidated its position at the top of the Spanish La Liga. Thanks to a brace from Brazilian offensive star Raphinha (70th and 86th), the double winner won 2-0 (0-0) against relegation candidate CA Osasuna on matchday 16 after a long unsuccessful run.

The victory puts the Catalans seven points ahead of record champions Real Madrid. The Royals have to play at Deportivo Alaves on Sunday. The future of coach Xabi Alonso is at stake. Real’s city rivals Atletico won 2-1 (1-0) against FC Valencia and thus maintained fourth place.

The situation for ter Stegen remains tense. Even before the game against Osasuna, it was clear that the situation for Ter Stegen remained hopeless. Coach Hansi Flick emphasized that Joan García would continue to be number one.

Marc-André ter Stegen was back in the squad after his injury break in the Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt. In view of Ter Stegen’s ambitions to be in Germany’s goal at the 2026 World Cup, a change of club in the winter seems almost inevitable.
