Marc-André ter Stegen returns to the FC Barcelona squad after back surgery. Despite his recovery, Joan García remains the first choice in goal.
Marc-André ter Stegen is back in the FC Barcelona squad after his back operation. He received clearance from the medical department and is ready for action for the Champions League game against Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday evening at the Camp Nou (from 9 p.m. in the t-online live ticker). Coach Hansi Flick had already announced the goalkeeper’s return at the press conference on Monday. However, Flick made it clear that Joan García remains number one.
Ter Stegen last played for Germany on June 8th in the Nations League against France. He was in goal for Barcelona on the penultimate league matchday against Villarreal FC. After back surgery in July, he was classified as a long-term injured player by the Spanish La Liga, meaning he would be out of action for at least four months. Before the season he lost his number one status due to a dispute over projected downtime.
A change of club in the winter could be relevant for Ter Stegen to support his ambitions for the 2026 World Cup. National coach Julian Nagelsmann emphasized that regular appearances are the basic requirement for a nomination.
