MAPA 2023: The art fair that opens the exhibition calendar

This year, MAP will open its doors on Thursday, March 9, at the Pavilion 8 of La Rural and will be attended by 50 galleries of the country and Latin America, with the special participation of Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Mexico. In the 2023 edition, contemporary art fair will bring together the current scene with the aim of promoting national and regional artistic production to strengthen the exchange between them.

Director Agustin Montes de Oca He pointed out that it aspires to “position, promote and professionalize the development of galleries.” For this reason, prizes will be given in the form of incentives “to be able to provide a space and enable concrete actions that promote the growth and sustainability of artistic projects at the federal and regional level,” he concluded.

“MAPA opens the calendar of city fairs, fulfilling a central role in a cultural agenda that is in permanent movement. This new edition works as a tool to expand access to culture that seeks to grow and contribute to creative development”, stated Enrique AvogadroMinister of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires, distinguishing the fair as a space where galleries from all over the country and the region bring their works to the public.

On this occasion, the exhibits will be divided into two sectors. The Central Section will host 43 galleries from Argentina among which are: Cecilia Caballero, AnarkoGallery, Colada, Espacio Maturín, Pólvora, Valk and Zeitgeist. On the other hand, the 22 galleries of Meridiano: Acéfala, Aldo de Sousa, Camarones Arte Contemporáneo, Cott, Gachi Prieto, Maman, Nora Fisch, OdA, Otto, Smart, Quimera, Wosco and Wunsch.

On the other hand, the second sector called Planisferio, is the first Latin American section of the fair presented by the curator Mercedes Lopez Moreyra, commissioned to invite seven galleries and regional projects such as LaNao from Mexico City, LOCAL Arte Contemporáneo, TIM Arte Contemporáneo and OMA Galería from Santiago de Chile, Judas from Valparaíso, Paiján from Trujillo, Peru and BLOC Art Peru from Lima. The goal of the curator is to bring to this edition a greater number of international artists.

“We call for professional projects that adapt and contribute new challenges to the fair’s ecosystem. We are looking for galleries corresponding to the emerging and alternative scene in Latin America and artists from cities outside the peripheries that go off the tangent of the traditional”, explained the curator of the exhibition.

Once again, FARO (Association of Galleries of Córdoba) will land in this edition with eleven projects with original proposals from the young Opens, Esaa, The White Lodge and Maria Wonda and the known Sasha D., Marchiaro and Via Margutta. Representing GIRO (Circuit of Galleries of Rosario) will be presented Contemporary Gabelich and Subsoil, with a proposal of emerging artists.

In this edition the prizes that will be awarded are: DIDEROT.Art Cultural Exchange Award in order to encourage crossovers between the Mexican and Argentine art scenes, through the Shed residence in Mexico, and the MAPA Cultural Exchange Award in Epecuén Residence, which is based on a full scholarship for international artists to participate in the Epecuén Residence in Buenos Aires.

Finally, at the fair you will be able to enjoy interdisciplinary events, performances, music, technology and an auditorium where talks and meetings moderated by Marcelo Dansey, that will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. between the different actors of the visual arts.

The fair takes place between March 9 to 12, 2023, from 12 to 8 p.m., at the La Rural propertylocated at Av. Sarmiento 2704 in the City of Buenos Aires. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays there will be tours that will focus on new art management practices and how the art market works today. All those who attend may register by showing up 15 minutes before the start of each tour in the Information area at the entrance to La Rural.
