Man who killed cyclist at 131 kilometers per hour faces stiff punishment

It was a crazy ride almost a year ago in Tilburg. 38-year-old Heuritus MS sped along the Ringbaan-Oost in his car. He killed a 61-year-old man and seriously injured a woman. The perpetrator will hear his sentence on Friday. He was sentenced to 9 years in prison.

On December 21, the man drove at 131 kilometers per hour on the Ringbaan-Oost in Tilburg. At the intersection with the Gelrebaan he drove through a red light and crashed into a 72-year-old cyclist, who was seriously injured.

His BMW X5 then left the road and killed a cyclist (61) on the cycle path. He then rammed a house and ended up back on the road through a parked car. He climbed out of the wreckage and took off. He was arrested a short distance away.

Manslaughter and attempted manslaughter, according to the justice department. In addition to the 9-year prison sentence, the public prosecutor also demanded that he not be allowed to drive for 10 years. A hefty demand for a series of serious violations.

For comparison: the 22-year-old man from Rotterdam who killed a 66-year-old man in Tilburg last May was sentenced to five years in prison. He drove through the city at 117 kilometers per hour and crashed around the wrong side of a traffic bollard, killing a man who was walking his dog.

The 38-year-old Heuritus MS made it even worse and broke almost all the rules:

  • He has never had a driver’s license, but only 11 driving lessons
  • He had used soft drugs, blood analysis shows
  • He did not wear glasses or lenses despite his poor eyesight (-3.25 and -2.75)
  • The traffic light had been red for 9.2 seconds
  • He drove between 117 and 145 kilometers per hour, where 50 is allowed
  • He thought he was driving outside the built-up area
  • He said there was no other traffic, but there were four cars at the red light

The Tilburg citizen was already known to the police and had previously been convicted of traffic violations. The man has been in jail since the accident on December 21.

The court will rule in this case on Friday at one o’clock.
