Man City with record income – highest salary expenditure in England

Only Barcelona pays more

Triple champion Manchester City brought in record revenue of 712.8 million pounds (around 818 million euros) last season. That’s £99.8 million more than in the same period last year. In its annual report for the 2022/23 season, the Champions League winner and English champion also announced a record profit of 80.4 million pounds (around 92.3 million euros) on Wednesday. That’s an increase of £41.7 million and twice as much as in the previous twelve months. For comparison: FC Bayern Munich just announced record sales of 854.2 million euros for the last season. Bayern made a profit of 54.5 million euros.

Manchester City recorded significant year-on-year growth in each of its three main sources of income: advertising, media rights and matchday revenue. City have won five of the last six Premier League titles since the ruling family of the Arab Emirate of Abu Dhabi took over under coach Pep Guardiola. In the previous season there was also triumph in the Champions League and the FA Cup.

City has recently faced allegations of Financial Fair Play breaches due to its spending on, among others, exceptional strikers Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish. In 2020, City averted a two-year ban from UEFA from European competitions before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The Premier League is accusing City of around 80 alleged breaches of its financial rules and 30 other breaches for allegedly failing to cooperate with an investigation.

Salary expenditure in one season: Manchester City outperforms Real Madrid

The “Times“ has meanwhile published the salary figures from the last triple season, which are also shown in the annual report. The “Citizens” spent 422.9 million pounds on player salaries in 2022/23, the equivalent of around 485 million euros – and, according to the newspaper, are the first English club to exceed the 400 million pound mark. In international football, only FC Barcelona pays more for salaries: 571 million euros per year.

Real Madrid, which has 413 million euros in expenses, has now been overtaken by Man City, it is said. The Skyblues have seen a wage increase of 20 percent compared to the previous year (£353.8 million). The increase can be attributed to a combination of title bonuses and the arrival of top earners like Haaland. The ex-BVB striker and Co. reportedly collect, ideally, up to 45 million pounds (around 52 million euros).
