Taiwo Awoniyi has not played as often under any other coach in his career as he did under Urs Fischer (for an overview). There were 65 games in a few days at 1. FC Union Berlin before the striker moved to Nottingham Forest in 2022. The 28-year-old hardly gets a chance with the English team – will a reunion with Fischer at 1. FSV Mainz 05 be an issue now? Awoniyi already played there once during a loan spell in the 2019/20 season.

At least, according to the “Kicker”, Awoniyi has become the focus of Rheinhessen. The FSV is looking for reinforcements for the most harmless storm in the Bundesliga. With only 13 goals, Mainz, together with 1. FC Heidenheim and St. Pauli, have the weakest attack after 15 match days. The best goalscorer is midfielder Nadiem Amiri (8 goals across all competitions). Sports director Christian Heidel has already announced that he will be targeting the offensive in the winter transfer window (to the news). However, it won’t be easy to sign a goalscorer. Nobody will fight to move to the bottom of the table.
The report speculates that the door could open for Awoniyi on a loan deal in January. The FSV probably couldn’t afford to buy it, they say. The right-footed player only logged 133 minutes in four appearances this season. Twice he sat on the bench for the full distance, while he was unavailable or not taken into account for the remaining games. He was not registered for the league phase of the Europa League.
Unsurprisingly, his market value fell for the fifth time in a row in the latest Premier League update. From the peak in October 2023, when there were 30 million euros, 12 million euros remained. If Awoniyi were to move to FSV, he would be the second most valuable signing in the club’s history. When he was on loan from Liverpool FC to Mainz in the 2019/20 season, he scored one goal in twelve games and at one point it was conceivable that the loan could be terminated early.
