He made a big job and achieved his goal. Now Lukas Märtens can not only call himself Olympic champion, but also world champion.
The 400 meter freestyle are his parade route-and Lukas Märtens has delivered again: The German swimming star vanished on Sunday at the World Championship in Singapore exactly one year after his Olympic victory to become the world champion.
He struck after 3: 42.35 minutes and clenched his fist when he looked at the scoreboard. He also screamed his joy – and also relief. Before the race, Märtens had a lot of pressure due to his Olympic victory and world record.
In April he prevailed the top mark of Paul Biedermann over 400 meters freestyle. After 16 years, Märtens cracked the world record by struck after 3: 39.96 minutes. Singapore was not about surpassing this time, but about winning gold.
National coach Bernd Berkhahn was also obviously happy that it worked for Märtens with the first World Cup title. Previously, Märtens won silver and twice bronze at World Championships.
In the race on Sunday, the Australian Sam Short (3: 42.37) was second in the race. Bronze went to Kim Woo-Min from South Korea (3: 42.60). The second German final participant and Olympic second in open water, Oliver Klemet, took eighth place.
