Bruins suggests setting up a nitrogen bank, where farmers can take over farmland from a colleague who stops working. “I had hoped that more would be known about these types of schemes, so that farmers can think about their future. Because they indicate: I want it, but I need to know what the circumstances are under which I will stop.”
Bruins thinks it is a missed opportunity that alternatives to reduce nitrogen emissions, such as innovation, are left behind. “An adjustment to your stable, or business operations. You can start with that tomorrow, it is not possible only due to legal posturing. That is ridiculous when you know that people cannot sleep at night because of uncertainty. We know that there are problems, It’s not like agriculture runs away from everything and doesn’t want anything.”
