‘Low grades and bad reviews’

Beddy Vedder’s presentation debut on Flemish television went extremely badly. His show is butchered in the dailies of our southern neighbours. “And the ratings? Mediocre!”

Together with a Flemish lady, Buddy Vedder presents the new TV program Tulips from Antwerp. The show has already started this week with our southern neighbors, but with us RTL 4 has sent everything back to the editing table. What are the viewing figures and criticisms like in Belgium? Very bad.

Exchangeable Buddy

The Latest News reviewer Bram De Brabander is ruthless: “The gaping void between the songs was filled with endless conversations in which the singers got no further than frequently practicing each other.”

De Humo gives only two and a half stars and De Morgen calls the Dutch candidates taking part, including the inevitable Samantha Steenwijk, ‘Dutch world stars that thank God you and I have never heard of’. And Buddy? It is called ‘excellent convertible’. Ai!

Finally, the Gazet van Antwerpen speaks of a ‘particularly bland decoction of Love for Music’, better known here as Best Singers.

Moderate viewing figures

And what about the ratings? TV professor Tina Nijkamp knows that. “Tulips from Antwerp has been viewed by 234,996 viewers in Belgium and ranks 13th in the top 20. Is that good? Wow, mediocre score. It is broadcast on the smaller channel Play4 and was the best viewed show of the day for that channel.”

It does not bode well for RTL 4. “Incidentally, RTL has informed me that it has always been the intention that the program will be broadcast here much later. It is intended for their summer schedule. Very late I think, also in terms of spoiler risk: does not seem good for the viewing figures.

Reassembly

And then the reassembly? “That is something they often do with co-productions, they say. Hopefully the re-editing of RTL 4 will at least yield better reviews in the Netherlands.”
