She emphasized that the security systems worked, but that they were also very outdated. According to her, the cameras on the outside of the museum are certainly a weak spot: “We did not see the arrival of the thieves early enough.”

Des Cars went on to say that old buildings such as the Louvre have “structural problems.” The museum has “not really been renovated” since the 1980s and “does not meet the standard”. She wants to close parts of the Louvre “little by little” for renovation in the coming years. She also advocated a “police station in the museum” and a doubling of the number of cameras.

Open again since today

The museum is open again today for the first time since the theft. “This was done in a way that guarantees the safety of everyone,” Des Cars emphasizes.

The director says that she offered her resignation to the Minister of Culture on Sunday after the theft, but that this was not accepted.

The eight stolen (crown) jewels were together worth around 88 million euros. According to experts, the stolen jewelry is very recognizable. Such as a tiara of Empress Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III. They are afraid that the pieces will be taken apart so that the diamonds can be sold separately.

A crown belonging to Empress Eugénie fell and was damaged while the perpetrators were fleeing. It is not yet clear whether it can be restored.
