At BVB, Nico Schlotterbeck is one of the top performers. Lothar Matthäus sees him a potential new Bayern star.

FC Bayern may be faced with upheavals in central defense. Lothar Matthäus puts a possible new addition to the Pay TV station Sky in his column, which plays at Borussia Dortmund.

Should Dayot Upamecano leave Bayern in summer, the record international in the team will see a problem in the central defender position – quantitative and qualitative. Matthäus writes: “Then FC Bayern should make an effort to Nico Schlotterbeck.”

Upamecano has long been negotiating an extension of his contract in Munich. This expires in the summer of 2026. At the same time, Schlotterbeck hesitates with an early extension of his contract with Borussia Dortmund, which is still running until 2027.

Matthäus considers the 25-year-old to be suitable for the German record champion: Schlotterbeck “definitely has the quality for FC Bayern”. A German international is always always interesting for the club. As a left foot, Schlotterbeck would “also” fit Jonathan Tah “also”, said Matthew. Bayern’s building game from his own defense would improve even further.

According to Matthäus, Schlotterbeck is even “worth considering” regardless of a possible Upamecanos departure. The future of Min-Jae Kim is “unclear”. The South Korean was the focus last summer as a potential sales candidate.
