Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” has now garnered more than 1 billion views on YouTube. The song joins other videos in the billionaire club such as Guns N’ Roses’ ‘November Rain’ and ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’, Linkin Park’s ‘Numb’, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Like A Stone ‘ by Audioslave, ‘Californication’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and more, according to Loudwire. The music video was filmed in 1986 at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles, California. Directed by Wayne Isham.

“Livin’ On A Prayer” is the second single from Bon Jovi’s 1986 album Slippery When Wet. It was written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child. Band member Alec John Such was not the bassist for the recordings, but Hugh McDonald, who recorded the bass melody typical of the song.

Even simple people can do anything

The track is about the “simple people” couple named Gina and Tommy. They are meant to represent the average New Jersey resident of the 1980s and represent the cliché of poor working people versus high-earning New Yorkers. There are also the lines “Tommy used to work on the docks” and “Gina works the diner all day”. The song wants to give people hope that they will get through everything: “We’re helped way there, […] take my hand, we’ll make it I swear”.

Richie Sambora, Jon Bon Jovi, Alec John Such, Tico Torres, David Bryan receive gold for “Slippery When Wet” circa 1986 in Los Angeles, California.

Taking to Twitter, the band challenged their followers (possibly to mark the 1 billion mark) to cover the said single: “We want to see you guys cover Livin’ On A Prayer! Link us your interpretation with the hashtag #BonJoviCover”

Jon Bon Jovi will be 61 years old in March 2023. The band’s current album from 2020 is called like the year: “2020”.
