Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp has been suspended for his team’s last game before the World Cup break. The 55-year-old saw a red card in the Premier League game against Manchester City in October and was initially only fined £30,000 (around €35,000). The English Football Association FA appealed against the punishment, which it considered too mild – and was successful, as stated in a statement.
That’s why Klopp is not allowed to sit on the bench with new coach Nathan Jones in the Reds’ home game against FC Southampton on Saturday (4:00 p.m. / in the TM live ticker). The original fine remains in place. Klopp accepted that his behavior against Man City in the 86th minute was inappropriate, it said in the first justification for the verdict. The 55-year-old aggressively complained to the referee team towards the end of the game in mid-October and then saw red.
In the Premier League, unlike in the Bundesliga, coaches are not automatically suspended. Klopp knew nothing about that. “I’ve never been in this situation, I haven’t seen a red card yet. As far as I know, I haven’t even received a yellow card.” The coach has now been suspended.
