It’s rolling
The field of the remaining 150 professional cyclists has just started moving. In a neutralized journey we go through Ribadesella on the north coast of Asturias, which is also called the “dinosaur coast” due to numerous bone finds. Located on the Cantabrian Sea, the old fishing port expresses the maritime character of the town.

Red jersey
The air is getting thinner and thinner for Sepp Kuss. The lead jersey he got on the 8th stage is gradually becoming too heavy for the American. After yesterday’s attack and the stage win of his teammate Jonas Vingegaard, the gap has shrunk to 29 seconds. That could be too little to be able to assert yourself at the top again. Jumbo-Visma is spoiled for choice anyway, as third-placed Primož Roglič is another driver on course for the podium.

Stage profile
The professional cyclists will begin their day’s work and their journey through Asturias almost at sea level. At the beginning it’s quite relaxed from a topographical point of view. The road gradually rises. After almost 50 kilometers, things become more pronounced before things really get down to business on the second part. When climbing through the Cantabrian Mountains, two peaks in the first category await you. The tough end comes with the grueling climb to Angliru at 1,558 meters. This mountain of the Category Especial is extremely steep in the last six or seven kilometers – at 24 percent in some places.

Welcome to the Vuelta a España! The 17th day section of the Tour of Spain leads over 124.5 kilometers from Ribadesella to the Altu de L’Angliru and ends there with a hearty mountain finish. The sharp start is scheduled to take place around 2:00 p.m.
