    Further placings at Col Hourcére

The other places in the first mountain classification went to Juan Pedro López Pérez (four points), Jonathan Castroviejo (two) and Damiano Caruso (one point).

  • 75km

    3:07 p.m

    Duo at the top

Remco Evenepoel and Romain Bardet used their mountain sprint and the lead they gained, did not allow themselves to be caught again and are currently contesting the descent as a duo, 20 seconds behind their former escape companions.

  • 70km

    3:05 p.m

    About the situation

The cyclists are now on an approximately 20 kilometer long descent. The twelve outliers build a gap of a good three minutes over the peloton. There are still a few scattered drivers hanging in between, but they have to orientate themselves towards the rear.

  • 66km

    3:03 p.m

    Mountain jersey

Jonas Vingegaard is still a point ahead in the mountain jersey rankings, but then Remco Evenepoel is already lurking with a total of 35 points. Michael Storer is third (31). This should also be a knock and sting on the next mountain.

  • 65km

    14:57

    Evenepoel wants the mountain jersey

In fact, Evenepoel is running. The Belgian champion wins this mountain classification, collecting 15 points and 920 euros for the Soudal Quick-Step team coffers. Behind him, Romain Bardet came second (10 points, 615 euros). Only then does Michael Storer (6 points) roll over the line.

  • 64km

    14:54

    First mountain classification

At the summit you get 15 points. Accordingly, we are expecting an attack from Michael Storer shortly, who would virtually slip into the mountain jersey. It will be interesting to see who is also interested in these meters. Maybe Remco Evenepoel also has an eye on it – as a replacement for the overall ranking and the loss there of more than 27 minutes yesterday.

  • 63km

    2:47 p.m

    Twelve leaders left

Meanwhile, the head group was being screened out. The twelve remaining drivers still include Lennard Kämna, who is still keeping a low profile. Remco Evenepoel and Mattia Cattaneo have already been mentioned. Then we have Juan Pedro López Pérez, Damiano Caruso, Romain Bardet, Nélson Oliveira, Rubén Fernández, Michael Storer, Jonathan Castroviejo, Sean Quinn and Lennert Van Eetvelt.

  • 61km

    2:39 p.m

    UAE works

In the peloton, the UAE Team Emirates is currently doing work for Jumbo-Visma. This also reduces the gap between the outliers to a good three minutes. Numerous pursuers in between are swallowed up again – including Nico Denz.

  • 60km

    2:30 p.m

Cattaneo as a helper for Evenepoel

Remco Evenepoel got another helper in Mattia Cattaneo. The Italian has made the leap forward and is now doing the work for his captain. There are currently 21 drivers who are more than four minutes ahead of the main field. But it’s still going up the mountain for quite some time – with sections of more than ten percent in some cases.

  • 58km

    14:27

    Evenepoel continues to be strong

It’s not just Groves who is quickly sorted out. The selection is in full swing. At the front of the group, Remco Evenepoel sets the pace. The peloton is four and a half minutes behind. There are still a few chasing groups hanging in between.

  • 57km

    14:23

    Groves at the forefront

By the way, Kaden Groves is also one of the outliers. The man in green seems to be looking at the intermediate sprint. But there are, among other things, two mountains of the highest category standing in the way. That seems hopeless, Alpecin-Deceuninck’s sprinter is already having problems.

  • 55km

    14:21

    Col Hourcere

The climb to the first mountain of the day officially begins at the very front. This is the Col Hourcére, a climb of the highest category. It goes over eleven kilometers with an average gradient of 8.7 percent up to a height of 1,440 meters.

  • 53km

    2:17 p.m

    pursuer

Calm returns to the peloton. A UAE driver uses this to escape. This is Finn Fisher Black. This team doesn’t have a man in front yet. A professional from EF Education-Easypost grabs his rear wheel. In any case, a chasing group has formed that hopes to eventually catch up with the top.

  • 50km

    2:10 p.m

    More outliers

Two people have Bahrain Victorious (Damiano Caruso, Kamil Gradek), Lidl-Trek (Juan Pedro López Pérez, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier), Groupama-FDJ (Michael Storer, Clément Davy), EF Education-EasyPost (Stefan Bissegger, Sean Quinn), Cofidis (André Carvalho, Rubén Fernández), DSM-Firmenish (Romain Bardet, Alberto Dainese) and Arkéa Samsic (Kévin Vauquelin, Kévin Ledanois).

  • 46km

    2:07 p.m

    Three boys from Intermarché-Circus-Wanty

Intermarché-Circus-Wanty is represented at the front with three professional cyclists. As a seasoned racing driver and road world champion from 2013, Captain Rui Costa has a good chance of winning the stage and will be able to enlist the help of Julius Johansen and Simone Petilli. The group’s lead has grown to just over a minute.

  • 42km

    2:02 p.m

Storer with a chance of winning the mountain jersey

Michael Storer is also among the fugitives. The Australian from Groupama-FDJ has the mountain jersey in mind and is third in the standings, just eleven points behind Jonas Vingegaard. To put it into perspective: a total of 38 mountain points are possible today.

  • 38km

    13:58

    24 outliers

Exactly 24 professional cyclists are in the breakaway group. Lennard Kämna is the only German there. As expected, Remco Evenepoel is also one of them. The best placed overall is Juan Pedro López Pérez – in eighteenth place, a good 21 minutes behind. Accordingly, Jumbo-Visma can let this happen and prepare for a relaxing day for the time being.

  • 34km

    1:55 p.m

    Large group goes

About 25 riders are now leaving. This looks like a promising escape attempt. Due to the size of the group, many teams are likely to have a driver there. You can probably come to terms with this situation.

  • 30km

    1:50 p.m

    Oloron Sainte Marie

Now the peloton goes through Oloron-Sainte-Marie. The image of this small town in southern France is shaped by the Notre-Dame church. The Sainte-Marie Cathedral is also one of the sights. In this place, the route of the stage provides for a change of direction – 90 degrees to the right. So from now on we move in a southwesterly direction.

  • 28km

    13:46

    Evenepoel always in front

Remco Evenepoel is very interested in doing something today and always shows himself to be ahead. The 2022 road world champion is keen to straighten things out after his slump yesterday. The Belgian lost his title defense yesterday and is no longer a candidate for the overall ranking, so the 23-year-old is very interested in winning the day.

  • 24km

    13:43

    Pyrénées-Atlantiques department

We are still on French soil, the journey takes us through the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. It’s still fairly flat on a fairly wide road. Naturally it rolls well. And finding the group of the day is difficult. At this rate it doesn’t seem to be happening.

  • 20km

    13:38

    Escape group provided

Despite the strong line-up, the group doesn’t go. In the peloton you are never not satisfied with the situation. Accordingly, everything is just rolling back together again. The pace is still murderous here.

  • 17km

    13:36

    More outliers

At that moment, eight other drivers roll up to the two escapees. Among them is Jasha Sütterlin. With Geraint Thomas there is another very strong professional cyclist.

  • 14km

    13:32

    Unrest in the field

In the peloton they are not yet satisfied with the situation. There are numerous teams that also want to have a man in the top group. Apparently today they actually expect that the day’s victory will be awarded from a breakaway group.

  • 11km

    13:29

    A duo sets off

Now two pedalers move slightly away. It’s almost logical that Remco Evenepoel, who has been very active so far, is there. The defending champion will be accompanied by Nélson Oliveira. For now, about ten seconds speak for the duo.

    13:24

    Kämna looks out in front

Lennard Kämna is also way ahead. The stage winner from last Sunday is celebrating his 27th birthday today. Congratulations!

  • 4km

    13:18

    Furious pace

Nobody gets away yet, no group is formed. The peloton is traveling at a hellish pace and is extremely drawn out. The road leads almost dead straight towards the southeast. This goes on for the first 30 kilometers or so.

  • 1 km

    1:15 p.m

    Sharp start

At this moment the race is released. You immediately pick up a sharp pace. And it doesn’t take long before the first professional cyclists try to break away. After yesterday’s disappointment, Remco Evenepoel is also active.

  • 13:12

    The remaining ratings

New in the white jersey of the best young driver is Juan Ayuso, who, in fourth place in the overall individual standings behind Jumbo-Visma, is the best of the rest of the field. Yesterday the Catalan took advantage of the opportunity and the collapse of the defending champion Remco Evenepoel. Michael Storer can start today with the golden starting number. When it comes to the team ranking, we are of course back with the guys from Jumbo-Visma, who are now leading by more than ten minutes.

  • 1:09 p.m

    Home game for Barthe

Cyril Barthe is allowed to drive ahead. The 27-year-old Frenchman was born in today’s starting town of Sauveterre-de-Béarn and is celebrating. Further back, one or two drivers take the opportunity to relieve themselves again. Every now and then the cameras outrageously capture such scenes.

  • 1:06 p.m

    It’s rolling

In the meantime, the peloton of the remaining 156 professionals has started moving. It rolls along in neutral speed in sunny summer weather. In view of the altitude difference to be completed (4,655), this is actually the most difficult part of the day in this Vuelta.

  • 1:03 p.m

    Mountain and sprint jersey

As a sideline, Jonas Vingegaard also got the mountain jersey yesterday – leading Sepp Kuss by nine points. Nevertheless, the gaps in this rating are not that big. There are still enough points to be picked up, so other teams and drivers can also count on something if a group gets away. Things still look clearer with the green jersey. Kaden Groves seems safe. And since the intermediate sprint is again late on the program today, it will probably be less interesting again.

  • 12:53

    Jumbo Visma can’t be beat

Yesterday Jumbo-Visma delivered another demonstration of strength. The Dutch team practically drove everything into the ground. Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard took the prestigious stage win on the Col du Tourmalet, followed by two teammates. These three men now also occupy the first three places in the overall ranking, which is still led by Sepp Kuss. Second is three-time Vuelta winner Primož Roglič. The only question now is who of the three will win the tour. The competition doesn’t seem to be able to cope with Jumbo-Visma’s dominance.

  • 12:43

    Stage profile

After yesterday’s queen stage, further efforts await the riders today. Once again there is a mountain stage on the program, crowned by a hearty final climb. In contrast to yesterday, however, things start a little more slowly. Nevertheless, the road climbs very slightly in the first 40 kilometers. This is to warm up for the first highest difficulty of the day, the Col Hourcère. This is followed by a further increase in the highest category. The border crossing from France back to Spain takes place at Puerto de Larrau. The thick end represents the fourth mountain finish of this Vuelta on the Puerto de Belagua.

  • 12:33

    Welcome

Welcome to the Vuelta a España! Today’s 14th stage of the Tour of Spain leads over 156.5 kilometers from Sauveterre-de-Béarn to Larra-Belagua. The sharp start is scheduled to take place around 1:15 p.m.
