Live ticker VfB Stuttgart – 1. FSV Mainz 05 (Bundesliga 2023/2024, 21st matchday)

VfB Stuttgart has been undefeated in seven Bundesliga games against FSV Mainz (W5 D2), longer against any other current Bundesliga team (also 7 against Darmstadt). Of all current Bundesliga teams, Mainz has only been without a win longer against Frankfurt (8) than against VfB.

FSV Mainz 05 has only won one of its past 25 Bundesliga games and has remained winless in its 10th BL game in a row (D6 L4). The zero-five team has only had a longer such negative streak within a season once, Mainz remaining in 2006/07 Under Jürgen Klopp, 16 BL games in a row without a win. Among all current BL teams, only Darmstadt (13) is currently waiting longer for a victory in the upper house than Mainz.

FSV Mainz 05 is playing its weakest Bundesliga season ever with 12 points after 20 games (W1 D9 L10) – Mainz had never had fewer than 13 points at the time of comparison. Mainz only got one win from their first 20 BL games, like only HSV in 2006/07 and Schalke in 2020/21 in the three-point era. For the 16th time in a row, the Zero Fives have to play away on a BL matchday on the carnival weekend.

VfB Stuttgart have won their last two Bundesliga games, scoring a total of eight goals, having only won one of their previous five games (D1 L3). No other team scored as many goals as VfB on the last two matchdays.

With 40 points after 20 games, Stuttgart is playing its strongest Bundesliga season – VfB only had that many points after 20 games in 1982/83 (calculated using the three-point rule) and came third at the end of the season. Never before had VfB had as many wins at the time of comparison as this season (13).

VfB Stuttgart has already scored 46 goals in the first 20 games of this Bundesliga season – which VfB only surpassed in 1982/83 (47) and 1984/85 (51). This means that the Swabians have the third best offense in the league behind FC Bayern (59) and Leverkusen (52). Mainz, on the other hand, only scored 15 goals – only 1. FC Köln (14) has bettered that in this BL season.

VfB Stuttgart created the second most big chances this Bundesliga season (81) – only FC Bayern (90) beat that. VfB is also in second place when it comes to converting big chances with 47% – only Bremen is better in proportion (55%). Mainz created the second fewest big chances (30) after Darmstadt (27) and only Union Berlin has a lower conversion of big chances (20%) than Mainz (23%).

Only Darmstadt (20.4 xG) has a lower expected goals value than FSV Mainz 05 (21.4 xG) so far this Bundesliga season. The zero fives undercut their xG value by 6.4 goals – only 1. FC Köln (-8.3 xG) is even more inefficient here. VfB Stuttgart, on the other hand, has the second highest xG value in the league (44.8) after FC Bayern (55.6).

Stuttgart’s Deniz Undav was directly involved in at least three goals in two Bundesliga appearances in a row (4D 2V), which has been a success since the beginning. Data collection 2004/05 for VfB previously only Serhou Guirassy in September 2023 (also 2). Undav scored 13 goals in his first 17 BL games – the last German player to score so many goals in his first 17 BL games was Horst Hrubesch in 1975/76 (even 14).

Chris Führich recently scored his sixth Bundesliga goal of the season in VfB’s 3-1 away win in Freiburg in the 20th game – a new personal record and already one more goal than in the entire previous season in 33 appearances. Führich scored five of his six goals this season at home.
