A Brit in the semifinals

Of course, most of the spectators on Center Court are hoping for Cameron Norrie. After all, he’s British. However, the left-hander was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and then grew up in New Zealand. As a teenager, he came to Europe, among other places, and switched to the British association, for which he is still active today. The 26-year-old doesn’t have much to do with England, however, as his father is Scottish and his mother is Welsh. But of course it all belongs to the UK. So he already has a home advantage somewhere.

Shortly

In the first match on Center Court, Barbora Krejčíková/Kateřina Siniaková just made short work of it and made it through to the final. The Czechs defeated the Ukrainian-Latvian duo Lyudmyla Kichenok/Jeļena Ostapenko 6-2 and 6-2 in 76 minutes. The space will soon be free. So our men’s match will start pretty much on time – around 16:15 CEST.

Djokovic 2022

For Djokovic, the tournament in south-west London is the first grass event of the season. Before that, the 35-year-old had last served in Roland Garros and was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Rafael Nadal. Before that, the Serb celebrated his only tournament win this year in Rome. Overall, this was his 87th career title and 38th at a Masters, which is a record. In addition, the five-time ATP champion is the only individual player who can claim the Golden Masters – i.e. triumphs in all tournaments of the Masters series. Djokovic is currently number 3 in the world.

Away from Djokovic

Previously, the top seeded Serb had lost a set against Soon-woo Kwon from South Korea and in the round of 16 against wildcard player Tim van Rijthoven, it was always the second. In between, the right-hander celebrated smooth victories against Thanasi Kokkinakis and compatriot Miomir Kecmanović, 25th seed. Djokovic is playing the tournament at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for the 17th time since 2005. He won the last of his six titles twelve months ago. And since the Djoker also won the two previous events, he now has 26 match successes in a row. The last defeat was inflicted on him by Tomáš Berdych in the 2017 quarterfinals.

Clear path for Djokovic?

The path to the 21st major title and the seventh here on the sacred lawn seems to be paved for the Djoker. From the point of view of paper, there are no longer any major hurdles in the way. The toughest competitors have already had to give up. However, that doesn’t mean that from now on everything can be done on the go. The Serb felt that only recently in the quarter-finals. Against the young Jannik Sinner, who is quite inexperienced on grass, the long-standing world number one was about to be eliminated. The 35-year-old staggered phlegmatically and aimlessly towards the abyss. But after two lost sets, going to the toilet and looking in the mirror helped him to find himself again. The five-time ATP champion actually turned the game around.
