Tooor for Newcastle United, 1-0 through Ben White

There’s a deserved lead for Newcastle. Joelinton has space on the left and is heading towards the baseline at pace. Then he brings the ball halfway up into the penalty area. Wilson comes in at the six-yard box and takes the cross directly with his left foot. The ball goes flat to the short corner. Ramsdale is still there, but cannot prevent the impact. Officials later determined it was an own goal by White. The defender was close to Wilson at the end and probably still decisive on the ball.

22:01

Kick-off 2nd half

45

21:50

mid-term conclusion
Newcastle and Arsenal go into the break with a goalless draw. The first 45 minutes clearly belonged to the Magpies. The home team had nearly 70 percent possession. Arsenal barely showed up on offense. Newcastle pushed the Gunners into their own penalty area for long stretches. However, Eddie Howe’s team didn’t have any great chances. Arsenal need to improve in the second half if Tottenham are to be overtaken today. The Magpies can be very pleased with this first half. The only thing missing is a goal.

Arsenal clear the corner.

37

21:37

Saint-Maximin moves quickly from the left to the middle. Then he shoots from 15 meters with the right to the short corner. Ramsdale is down quickly and saves the ball for a corner.

34

21:35

After a corner from the right, Schär tries a volley. The shot is blocked.

Arsenal’s pressure phase was just a flash in the pan. The Magpies are now back in control of the game.

Targett brings a corner to the center from the left. Joelinton heads in from the six yard box but Tomiyasu clears with a header.

28

21:28

Callum Wilson is currently being treated because one of his incisors is no longer fully seated. It looks very awkward, but the striker obviously wants to keep playing.

27

21:26

Arsenal are now caught. The game is shifting more and more into the Newcastle half.

24

21:24

Saka is getting more and more noticeable now. The Englishman pulls into the middle from the right and then shoots at goal from 20 meters with his left. Dúbravka is able to hold the low shot.

21

21:21

Saka brings the corner from the right to the middle. Gabriel just misses the ball. Then Newcastle can clarify.

21

21:21

Saka combines with a one-two on the right into the penalty area. Then he shoots with his left into the long corner. The ball is deflected to the corner.

20

21:19

The Magpies play a real power play in the last few minutes. The guests from London don’t even know what’s happening to them.

18

21:18

Newcastle plays well into the penalty area. Then the ball comes halfway up from Longstaff in the five. Ramsdale misses the point a bit. White clears for his goalie.

16

21:16

Surprisingly, the home side have more possession in this initial phase. Actually, the Magpies like to limit themselves to defending against good teams. So far, however, they have kept Arsenal away from their own goal with courageous offensive play.

13

21:13

Newcastle are the more dangerous side so far. Arsenal are yet to find any means against the Magpies’ good structure.

11

21:12

Joelinton plays the ball into Wilson’s run on the left. The striker crosses the penalty area. A defender can clarify. Although it was offside, the through ball to Wilson caused real problems for Arsenal’s defence.

Ben White

Yellow card for Ben White (Arsenal FC)

White tears Wilson down on the left wing and sees a yellow card for it.

8th

3

21:02

The ball is initially much in midfield. Neither team has made it into the last third so far.

20:48

Compared to the 0: 3 against Tottenham, Mikel Arteta changed three positions. Emile Smith Rowe will start in attacking midfield in place of Gabriel Martinelli. Also, Ben White replaces Rob Holding in central defense and Nuno Tavares starts in left-back. For this, Takehiro Tomiyasu moves to the right side of defense and Cédric Soares initially sits on the bench.

20:43

Newcastle United were beaten 5-0 by Manchester City last Sunday. Compared to this game, Eddie Howe makes two changes to his starting XI. Fabian Schär is preferred to Jamaal Lascelles in central defence. Also, Callum Wilson starts in the storm center instead of Chris Wood.

20:38

Whilst the home side are no longer at stake today, Arsenal are almost doomed to win. After the clear 0-3 defeat in the North London Derby, the Gunners have now been overtaken in the table by Tottenham. The Spurs have a two-point lead in fourth place, but also have a game more to their credit. A win against Newcastle would see Mikel Arteta’s side jump back into the Champions League spot. On the last day of the game, there will be a long-distance duel with Tottenham. Arsenal play Everton. The Spurs are visiting Norwich.

20:32

After an extremely weak first half of the season with just one win from 19 games, the nouveau riche Newcastle United caught up in the second half of the season. In the second half of the table, the Magpies are fourth with two games to go. They could even end up being the third best team in the second half of the season. Before that would only be the out-of-competition teams of Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp. No matter how it ends, this second half of the season is a real pointer towards the top 6. Newcastle can get involved at the top.
