Thiem in Melbourne
Thiem will be at the Australian Open for the tenth time since his debut in 2014. By far his best performance in Melbourne comes from 2020. Back then, the Austrian stormed into the final and was defeated by Novak Djokovic in five sets.

By the way, this was Thiem’s 29th final; the right-hander once won 17 titles – crowned by the US Open victory in 2020. At the peak of his career, he was ranked number three in the world. Thiem is currently 92nd in the world rankings and started the tennis year in the qualifications in Brisbane. He won these two matches after falling behind in a set. Once in the main field, it was the end of the line against Rafael Nadal.

Thiem is still far from his former form. After a wrist injury, the Lower Austrian had to take a long break and then had a hard time getting going again. Last year, the Lichtenwörther native also addressed mental problems. On the ATP tour, the 30-year-old often has to go through the qualifications after temporarily falling out of the top 100, and is also plagued by first-round defeats and regular early eliminations.
