EU foreign chief misses Russia’s concessions in peace plan

EU foreign chief Kaja Kallas misses concessions from Russia in the US-Russia peace plan. That plan, which was reported by the Financial Times and news site Axios, would include requiring Ukraine to give up territory and halve its army. “In this war there is one aggressor and one victim, but we have not seen any concessions from the Russian side,” Kallas said before the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
Russian President Vladimir Putin “could of course end this war immediately if he stops bombing civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, civilians and killing people,” Kallas said. “He could also have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire earlier.”
According to Kallas, US President Donald Trump cannot end the war. “The Ukrainians and Europeans must also agree to the plans.”
“We welcome all meaningful efforts to end this war, but peace must be just and lasting.”
The foreign ministers of Germany, Poland and France also think so. They also believe, just like the Netherlands and Kallas, that Ukraine and the EU should be involved in the discussions.
Before peace negotiations can begin, Putin must end the war against Ukraine, German Minister Johann Wadephul said.

For France and Poland, Ukraine’s surrender of territory is unacceptable. “Peace cannot be capitulation. Ukrainians who have heroically resisted Russia’s war of aggression for more than three years will refuse any form of capitulation,” French Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said.
