Liga MX 2005/06 in TM database: Pep Guardiola ends career

…better and better!

Another milestone in the TM database: the 2005/06 season of the Mexican Liga MX is complete. In the first half of the season, Deportivo Toluca celebrated winning the Apertura in the final against CF Monterrey after beating CF Monterrey 3-3 on aggregate. Vicente Sánchez, who played for Schalke 04 between 2008 and 2010, scored in the first game and contributed a brace in the second meeting.

In the second half of the season, however, CF Pachuca won the Clausura in the final round against San Luis after a 0-0 aggregate win and a 1-0 reverse. The “Erdhörnchen” were already the best team in the regular season and had 31 points after 17 match days. This was followed by the knockout phase, in which eight teams fought for the championship – while the 2005/06 season went on for these teams, it ended for the remaining teams.

This was the end of Pep Guardiola’s active life at the age of 35. The Spaniard joined Dorados de Sinaloa in winter 2006, for whom he made ten appearances and scored one goal. A year later he started his coaching career with the head coaching role at FC Barcelona B. Guardiola was relegated with the Mexican club despite finishing third out of six in their own season. This was made possible by the Mexican relegation system, in which the average number of points over the past three years, i.e. from six championships, is used. A team is determined each year that has to compete in the second division.

In 2005 it was Dorados de Sinaloa who, curiously enough, had the top scorer in both the Apertura and Clausura in Sebastián Abreu. While Guardiola ended his career in the summer of 2006, CF América’s Pável Pardo and CD Cruz Azul’s Ricardo Osorio made the leap to Europe to join VfB Stuttgart.
