Liam Lawson will also replace the injured Daniel Ricciardo at the Formula 1 team AlphaTauri in the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. The Australian has still not recovered sufficiently from his broken metacarpal, an injury he sustained during training at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort.
Lawson is preparing for his third appearance. The young New Zealander impressed with his ninth place in the Singapore Grand Prix last Sunday and is seriously competing for a permanent seat at AlphaTauri for next season.
Director Peter Bayer of Red Bull’s sister team announced at the Suzuka circuit that Lawson is competing with Ricciardo and the Japanese Yuki Tsunoda for the two seats for 2024. “Of course we have a certain idea about how it could ideally be done. but at the moment we leave it open and all three have a chance,” Bayer said on Sky Sports.

Tsunoda has had two unfortunate races. In the Grand Prix of Italy he retired in the warm-up lap with a sputtering car, in the Grand Prix of Singapore his race ended on the first lap after a touch with Sergio Pérez.
Lawson himself already stated in the media that he would be disappointed if he were to fall back into a reserve role in 2024. “I understand how difficult it is to get into Formula 1, but now that I have this opportunity, I will do everything I can to show that I am worthy of a permanent seat.”
